Katherine Pacynski Receives Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Regional Leadership Award

At its recent annual meeting, the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan honored Dobrusin Law Firm shareholder Katie Pacynski with its Regional Leadership Award.

Each year, WLAM recognizes outstanding advocacy for the advancement of women, judiciary role models, and regional development. Katie recently completed her cycle on the Executive Board of the Women’s Bar Association (WBA), which represents the Oakland region of WLAM, serving as the immediate past president. From 2020 to 2021, she served as president of the WBA, and before that, she served terms as president-elect, vice president, and recording secretary.

Erin Klug Sworn in as WLAM President for 2022-23

On Friday, June 3, 2022, the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (WLAM) held its 104th annual meeting at the Detroit Zoo. Dobrusin Law Firm shareholder Erin Klug was sworn in as the organization’s president during the program. She has served on WLAM’s board of directors since 2016.

The theme for the 2022-23 year is the Power of the Pack, built on the notion that women can do a lot of good as a group and originating from an idea from Brooke Baldwin’s Huddle. As Erin conveyed in her first President’s Message:

The book discusses the concept of how women unlock their collective power together – by being together, having each other, and leaning on one another. Whether facing adversity (like workplace inequity or a global pandemic) or organizing to make the world a better place, women are a highly potent resource for one another.

Erin is no stranger to leading professional groups. From 2010 to 2019, she served on the board of directors (and president from 2017 to 2018) of the Women’s Bar Association, which represents the Oakland Region of the WLAM. She is also the chair-elect of the State Bar of Michigan’s Animal Law Section Council and an officer with two non-profits – Attorneys for Animals and The Barn Sanctuary.

Nearly 300 attendees enjoyed the festive atmosphere and near-perfect spring weather, taking advantage of the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and meet “virtual” friends in person. Erin was surrounded by and supported by many of her peers and friends, including colleagues from The Dobrusin Law Firm, the event’s Gold Sponsor.

We congratulate Erin for her inspirational leadership, years of valuable service to WLAM and other organizations, and tireless commitment to our Michigan legal community. We wish her success during her tenure as WLAM’s new president.

Women’s Bar Association Holds Successful Annual Dinner Event, Thanks to Katie Pacynski and The Dobrusin Law Firm

The Women’s Bar Association (WBA) held its annual dinner at the Birmingham Athletic Club on May 26, 2022, and as the event’s Gold Sponsor, The Dobrusin Law Firm’s presence was widely seen at the event.

The WBA, representing the Oakland Region of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, seeks to advance the interests of women in the legal profession and promote equality for all. Three Dobrusin attorneys have led the organization as president – Kristen Pursley (2016-17), Erin Klug (2017-18), and most recently, Katherine Pacynski (2020-21).

As immediate past president and in her final responsibility before stepping off the WBA Executive Board, Katie planned the gala, including a cocktail hour, appetizers, and a full-capacity sit-down dinner for the attorneys, judges, and families in attendance. Katie also introduced the new board for 2022-23.

During the program, retired Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Denise Langford Morris received the Joan Young Judicial Excellence Award (presented by Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Kameshia Gant), and Channelle Kizy-White received the Evelyn Forrest Distinguished Advocate Award.

Additionally, outgoing WBA President Kristina Bilowus honored Katie Pacynski with the Model Leader Award for her contributions to the board, describing Katie as “one of the most effective past WBA presidents in recent memory.”

We congratulate Katie for planning a fantastic event, her years of valuable service to the WBA, and her well-deserved recognition!

The Dobrusin Law Firm Sponsors Pontiac Economic Summit Revisit

Not only is our firm located in Pontiac’s downtown business district, but we are also avid proponents of the city’s economic development. Recently, The Dobrusin Law Firm sponsored the Greater Pontiac Committee of 50 Economic Summit Revisit, held on April 2, 2022, at Oakland University.

The mission of the Greater Pontiac Community Coalition, founded by Reverend Douglas Jones, is to “collectively exercise actions and advocacy to generate individual, social, and institutional change.” The Committee of Fifty focuses on economic development, helping to design, review, and implement initiatives to make Pontiac a “City of Destination.”

The Revisit is a follow-up to the Committee of 50’s 1st Annual Economic Summit in November 2021 and an opportunity for subgroups to present plans and results generated since the fall meeting.

Founding Shareholder Eric Dobrusin has long been committed to Pontiac’s renaissance. In 2018, the Coalition honored Eric with its Community Courage Award for his work to positively impact the city, including his involvement with the Oakland University-Pontiac Initiative Early Childhood Group.

Pontiac Regional Chamber Honors Eric Dobrusin With Its Champion Member of the Year Award

The Pontiac Regional Chamber has named Founding Shareholder Eric Dobrusin the 2021 Champion Member of the Year (for-profit category), recognizing his contributions, volunteerism, and community leadership over the past year. The PRC bestowed the award during its 6th Annual Prosperity Pontiac Event on March 30, 2022.

Eric has been a longtime Pontiac supporter and advocate, starting with his decision to locate The Dobrusin Law Firm’s main office in the downtown district. As he remarked in a July 2021 feature article in Michigan Lawyers Weekly:

Pontiac doesn’t receive nearly the attention it deserves. Aesthetically, its buildings (including ours) are architectural gems, and it offers a special environment teeming with creativity, intellect, and entrepreneurial spirit. We have benefited from that vibe, and we have been committed to the city because we want to be good neighbors and make a difference.

Throughout the years, Eric has spearheaded several programs benefitting Pontiac’s businesses and residents, especially kids:

  • One of his earliest projects was to help fund the improvement of a vacant parcel of land downtown, converting it into a small pedestrian park.
  • The Downtown Pontiac Business Association and Main Street Pontiac honored the law firm with their 2018 Partner Award.
  • The Greater Pontiac Community Coalition honored Eric with its Community Courage Award for his work to positively impact the city, including his involvement with the Oakland University-Pontiac Initiative Early Childhood Group.
  • Eric Dobrusin and Alley Cat Café owner Danny Martinez, together with Shareholder Daniela Walters and Community Outreach Coordinator Marijayne Renny, established the Phoenix Races—a partnership between Main Street Pontiac, General Motors, and local technology-focused companies to encourage Pontiac middle and high school students to pursue STEAM education and careers.
  • In 2021, Eric, Marijayne, and the firm led a community-wide fundraising effort—the Pontiac Skatepark Project—to build a safe, accessible, and sustainable 10,000 square-foot facility for youth and adults.

Eric constantly promotes Pontiac and has made giving back to the city and its people part of The Dobrusin Law Firm’s DNA. Please join us in congratulating Eric on this award!

She guides clients in various industries through the application and registration processes and enforces those rights once granted. In analyzing Becky’s stand-out skills, WTR says her “rich CV includes previous manufacturing and corporate roles, giving her a well-rounded view of the issues her IP clients face. Tenacious and commercial, she never lets anything stand in the way of robust rights protection.”

Helping clients understand how to build, protect, and enforce their brands is what Becky does best. Possessing a keen understanding of the efforts required to create a successful business, Becky devotes her practice to copyright protections and the prosecution of trademarks from inception to registration. Her clientele is diverse and includes the automotive industry, clothing designers, tequila manufacturers, small breweries, cannabis companies, skincare companies, logistics companies, start-ups, and medical device companies.

With independent researchers conducting hundreds of interviews with trademark specialists in over 50 key jurisdictions, WTR 1000 identifies firms and individuals setting industry benchmarks for trademark legal services. The list comprises the firms and individuals to whom trademark professionals turn when seeking local and international legal partners.

Michigan Lawyers Weekly Honors Erin Klug As a “Go To Lawyer” in Intellectual Property

Michigan Lawyers Weekly™ has announced its first-ever class of “Go To Lawyers” in Intellectual Property, which includes Dobrusin Law Firm shareholder Erin Klug.

Highly valued by her clients and well-respected by her colleagues, Erin is a standout in both the IP bar and the Michigan legal community generally. She is a talented patent, trademark, and copyright attorney who represents large corporations, innovative companies, and solo entrepreneurs in intellectual property opportunities and strategy. Erin’s pragmatism, problem-solving abilities, and well-reasoned counsel have earned recognition from peers and clients alike.

According to the Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s nomination criteria, a Go To Lawyer is:

  • An expert in their field, well-versed in the nuances of the case law, statutes, and regulations clients will encounter.
  • Experienced and enjoys a record of success, with many matters that give testimony to the quality advice they can provide.
  • A creative thinker who identifies all options for a client.
  • One to whom other lawyers make referrals because of their expertise and accomplishments.
  • An attorney another Michigan lawyer might call when requiring legal help in that field.

The “Go To Lawyers” designation is another in a long series of accolades for Erin and her legal knowledge and IP subject-matter expertise. She has received awards from Crain’s Detroit Business, DBusiness Magazine, and Super Lawyers®. Michigan Lawyers Weekly named her to its 2017 class of Michigan Lawyers Weekly Up & Coming Lawyers, and the Oakland County Executive selected Erin for 2016’s Elite 40 Under 40.

Erin is also an active member of her communities, volunteering her time and energy to lead organizations and important causes. She serves as the president-elect of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (she received the WLAM’s Leadership Award in 2017) and is a past president of the Women’s Bar Association, Oakland Region. Daniela Walters, Eric Hydorn, and Bryan Lemanski Hone Their Patent Practice Skills in PTAB Mock Argument Program

While much of the advocacy in patent prosecution is in the form of written words, opportunities for oral advocacy do present themselves. During prosecution, practitioners may be required to conduct examiner interviews or attend Patent Trials and Appeals Board (PTAB) hearings, both of which require such oral advocacy.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently provided an opportunity to practice oral advocacy with its Legal Experience and Advancement Program (LEAP). A select group of practitioners from across the country were paired as counsel and co-counsel and advocated their side of a mock case in which the patentability of a sports helmet was disputed. Arguments were presented to current administrative PTAB judges during an abbreviated argument presentation.

Dobrusin shareholder Daniela Walters and associates Eric Hydorn and Bryan Lemanski participated in the LEAP event. Each improved their knowledge in preparing arguments, controlling the record during the trial, and addressing questions posed by the judges. The USPTO’s continued collaboration with practitioners provides crucial skill-building opportunities that improve the quality of the trial relationship between the PTAB and practitioners.

Michigan Lawyers Weekly Recognizes Becky Ballard as an “Unsung Legal Hero” for 2021

We are delighted to share that legal administrative assistant Becky Ballard has been named to Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s 2021 class of “Unsung Legal Heroes.”

The Unsung Legal Hero award honors law firm employees who consistently go above and beyond the call of duty, often behind the scenes. The honor is reserved for the most talented and dedicated legal support professionals in the state.

Shareholder Katie Pacynski wrote this in support of Becky’s nomination:

No one works harder than Becky. She has been my assistant for many years, and I continue to be impressed by her absolute dedication while she balances tremendous family demands.

Becky knows my docket like the back of her hand, and she is on top of everything. She anticipates my requests, has all necessary paperwork completed before I even have to ask, and seeks to understand WHY we do things. Becky has strong attention to detail and does whatever is needed without complaint. She not only has to deal with me (a person who, admittedly, has unreasonably high expectations), but she also supports Paul Palinski, one of our busiest attorneys.

COVID has been especially difficult for Becky. She has five children (the youngest still in elementary school) and four grandchildren, many of whom live with her, and she regularly helps her brother, a single father with full custody of his nine children.

I cannot think of someone more deserving than Becky to be recognized for all she does.

A ten-year veteran of The Dobrusin Law Firm, Becky is an essential part of what we do and a valued member of our family. Congratulations, Becky!

Dobrusin Law Firm Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary… at the Movies

In November 1999, Eric Dobrusin launched a new law firm with a vision for a different kind of law practice. The rest, they say, is history.

On December 4, 2019, the Dobrusin Law Firm family, along with our families, clients, and friends came together at Pontiac’s Little Art Theater to reflect on Eric’s vision and celebrate our 20th anniversary. We enjoyed food from our friends at Moonlight Catering and a private screening of the classic comedy – also from 1999 – “Office Space.”

We extend a heartfelt thank you to those who attended the event, the clients we proudly serve, and the many people and organizations who have contributed to the firm’s success.

Here’s to the next 20 years and beyond!

Paul Palinski Named to Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s 2019 List of “Up & Coming Lawyers”

We are proud to announce that Michigan Lawyers Weekly selected Dobrusin Law Firm shareholder Paul Palinski to the 2019 class of “Up & Coming Lawyers.” He received his award at a luncheon at the Detroit Marriott in Troy on December 5, 2019.

Paul has become recognized in the legal community as a thoughtful problem-solver and trusted colleague. A registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, he concentrates his practice on patent counseling and strategic patent prosecution, with an emphasis on mechanical, electromechanical, and biomedical technologies.

According to Michigan Lawyers Weekly, the honor is bestowed upon attorneys “who are establishing a name for themselves, go above and beyond, and display the ambition, drive, determination, and accomplishments that set them apart among their peers — in their first ten years in practice.”

Paul has always been intrigued by new and emerging technology, manufacturing methods and systems, engineering, and design, but he says the most fulfilling part of his job is meeting with first-time inventors to learn about their innovations. One particularly rewarding matter came early in his legal career. The client invented a device to protect students and teachers from active shooter situations in schools. He saw the value in the product and believed in it and the inventors. The product was eventually commercialized and sold to schools, and it is currently available for purchase.

Outside the office, Paul enjoys giving back to his profession and helping his community. He regularly presents seminars to entrepreneurs and startups in Metro Detroit on the basics of patent law at WeWork. Paul is also a board member at the McLaren Oakland Foundation, which obtains funds through charitable donations used for enhancing patient care, performing healthcare research, providing health-related education, purchasing clinical equipment, and building new facilities.

Congratulations, Paul, on this distinguished honor!

Dobrusin Law Firm Is Gearing Up for the 2019 Phoenix Derby Races!

In a race day that is as much about inspiring future science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) students as they are about which gravity cars cross the finish line first, The Dobrusin Law Firm is proud to serve as Presenting Sponsor for the 2nd Annual Phoenix Derby Races organized by Main Street Pontiac.

During the August 2 event, we’ll also be cheering for “Team Dobrusin” as they race their derby cars to celebrate the firm’s 20th-anniversary during the evening’s adult bracket. We are excited to see our teams race toward the checkered flag against our downtown neighbors with a little friendly competition!  Shareholder, Daniela Walters, and Community Outreach Coordinator, Marijayne Renny are driving forces behind the event, both as representatives of the firm and board members of Main Street Pontiac.

The Phoenix Derby Races are designed to cultivate fun and encourage mentoring relationships between STEAM professionals and middle and high school-aged kids who are curious about future careers in STEAM fields. The day-long event pairs teams of three to four students with two adults who work as engineers, tradesmen, or other STEAM-focused professionals, with each team creating a wooden gravity-powered car to race down Wayne and West Lawrence Streets (closed to traffic throughout the day).  After the student races in the afternoon, the evening provides an opportunity for local downtown businesses to race against each other in their own custom derby cars, providing an evening of networking and comradery for local professionals.

The race is made possible through significant involvement from our community neighbors and partners.  In addition to The Dobrusin Law Firm, sponsors and partners include General Motors Pontiac Engineering Center, DASI Solutions, M1 Concourse, Genisys Credit Union,  Alley Cat Café, Marriott of Auburn Hills and Pontiac, the City of Pontiac, Pontiac Regional Chamber, Harmony Healing, STAR EMS, Honor Community Health, and LocalHop.

To end the student races, Main Street Pontiac, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works with the City of Pontiac government, Oakland County Economic Development, and the Pontiac Downtown Business Association, will award three $1,000 scholarships to students intent on pursuing post-secondary educations in STEAM fields.

Katherine Pacynski Graduates from Leadership Oakland’s Cornerstone Program

We congratulate Dobrusin Law Firm shareholder Katherine Pacynski on graduating from Leadership Oakland’s select leadership development program, Cornerstone. Through a series of monthly day-long sessions led by subject matter experts and a day of service to end the term, Cornerstone focuses on informing and preparing southeast Michigan’s emerging leaders, a nine-month program Katie recently completed.

As a member of Leadership Oakland’s Class XXIX, Katie gained insight into topics impacting neighboring cities and counties. From government and the justice system to healthcare and education, the program offered perspectives about Southeast Michigan’s interconnected economic, civic, and municipal communities.

“I have enjoyed watching Katie blossom professionally, from a timid law clerk to her role as a community leader, full-time working parent, and shareholder of our Firm,” said Dobrusin Law Firm Founding Shareholder Eric Dobrusin. “The Leadership Oakland Cornerstone program has proven a successful training ground for law firm shareholders Kristen Pursley and Dan Aleksynas, and it will be fun to see how Katie puts her skills to new use.”

The Dobrusin Law Firm was also proud to sponsor the Leadership Oakland Day of Service for Class XXIX.  Throughout the year, the class raised funds for and coordinated the purchase of two swing sets, a playscape, and a chicken coop and chicken run for the House of Providence Holly campus.  In May, the members of the class worked together to build the playground and chicken run, giving the boys at House of Providence, many of whom have suffered unimaginable abuse, a place to play and learn.

Originating in 1990, the Leadership Oakland Cornerstone Program’s goal is to identify leaders and provide them with a network of colleagues, a deep understanding of the region’s challenges, and an opportunity to bring value to their own organizations, creating new levels of leadership. For information about Leadership Oakland or to apply to the Cornerstone program, please visit leadershipoakland.com.

Eric Dobrusin Concludes His Term as MIPAIC President Following an Impressive Year

Established in 2012, the Michigan Intellectual Property American Inn of Court (MIPAIC) is a society of judges, lawyers, legal educators, law students, and others who seek to promote excellence in the advocacy of intellectual property. Consistent with other members of the Linn Inn Alliance, MIPAIC is committed to education, collegiality, and the highest ethical values.

After sitting on the executive committee for the previous four years, Dobrusin Law Firm founder Eric Dobrusin served as MIPAIC’s president for the 2018-2019 term, spearheading noteworthy accomplishments during his time in office.

Although a relatively young organization compared to other Inns of Court in the United States, with Eric’s guidance, MIPAIC maintained Platinum Level Recognition, the highest honor in the American Inns of Court Achieving Excellence Program, in recognition of superior administration, communications, programs, mentoring, and outreach.

During his presidency, Eric placed great emphasis on mentorship and networking among members of the MIPAIC. Through his direction and encouragement, the members participated in events such as “Speed Mentoring” and a Quiz Bowl evening to allow pupillage teams to learn more about each other. Under his leadership, pupillage teams were also inspired to participate in community service activities, such as volunteering at Gleaners Community Food Bank. Additionally, as part of its community service outreach efforts, MIPAIC proudly supported the Arthritis Foundation, placing sixth among fundraising teams for the 2018 Detroit Jingle Bell Run last December. In the educational area, the Inn hosted the Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office at a well-attended Copyright Legal Forum at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in February 2019.

We congratulate Eric on his successful leadership of MIPAIC over the past year and thank him and his fellow board members, including Dobrusin Law Firm managing shareholder Kristen Pursley, for stewarding the organization to national recognition.

Katherine Pacynski Sworn in as President-Elect of the Women’s Bar Association

We are delighted to announce that shareholder Katherine Pacynski is the new President-Elect of the Women’s Bar Association (the Oakland Region of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan)! Katie, who previously served as Vice President, and her fellow incoming officers (pictured above) were sworn in during the organization’s recent annual dinner celebrating a year of accomplishments by the 2018-2019 board.

In conjunction with her new role, Katie represented the WBA at the State Bar of Michigan’s annual Bar Leadership Forum. The two-day program offered networking and educational opportunities to leaders of local and special-purpose bar associations across the state as well as State Bar section leaders.

Katie’s involvement in the WBA is another example of her dedication to the legal professional and the local business community. She is also active in the Michigan Intellectual Property Inn of Court and is a graduate of Leadership Oakland. In 2018, Katie was named to the Oakland County Executive’s Elite 40 Under 40.

The firm is proud of Katie’s accomplishments, and we look forward to supporting her and the WBA in its mission to secure the rights of women in society, advance the interests of women in the law, and promote equality and social justice for all people.

Recognizing the importance of elevating women in the law, the Dobrusin Law Firm, PC is pleased to announce our sponsorship and support of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation’s (WLAMF) annual scholarship program. This marks the inaugural year the firm has participated in the program, and it’s an honor to name Tanya Elzy as the first recipient of the WLAMF Dobrusin Law Firm scholarship.

“We could not be more impressed by Tanya’s academic career, community advocacy, and efforts to empower women. She also distinguishes herself by her passion toward the law, entrepreneurship, and the desire to ultimately give back to the Pontiac community.” said Eric Dobrusin, Founding Shareholder at Dobrusin Law Firm (located in Pontiac).  “She certainly sets the bar high for future applicants.”

Hailing from Pontiac, Michigan, Tanya is the first college graduate in her family – an academic goal she has tackled boldly and successfully.  After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Cornerstone University, she earned her master’s degree in public administration from Oakland University in 2016.  Tanya is on track to graduate from Cooley Law School in 2021. She currently serves as Vice President for the Black Law Student Association (BLSA) at the Auburn Hills campus of Cooley Law school and was a Mock Trial finalist during her first year of Law school.

The Dobrusin Law Firm, alongside 11 other law firms and professional organizations, partnered together to sponsor the WLAMF annual scholarship program, which this year awarded an impressive $42,000 in scholarship money to Michigan’s brightest women law students. “Our organization’s responsibility to women and inclusion in the legal field is not a problem to be solved, but rather it’s an opportunity to be seized,” said Kristen Pursley, WLAMF President and Shareholder at the Dobrusin Law Firm. “Tanya and the other 11 awardees certainly demonstrate that they know how to seize every opportunity in order to excel.”  In addition to their superior academic performance at Michigan law schools, all recipients demonstrate leadership and advance performance in important areas of the law, including STEM, social justice, equality, child advocacy, and domestic violence.

Since 1997, the WLAM Foundation has awarded more than $610,500 to 252 women law students.

The Dobrusin Law Firm Proudly Supports Double Dog Dare Challenge Benefitting Leader Dogs for the Blind

The Dobrusin Law Firm proudly supported the “Double Dog Dare” challenge benefitting Leader Dogs for the Blind on September 22, 2018.

The Double Dog Dare sent participants over the edge of the Oakland Towne Center in downtown Pontiac, Michigan, safely rappelling 15 stories down the side of the building. Not only was it a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but also raised money for Leader Dog and its ongoing mission to provide programs and services at no cost to clients.

According to founder and shareholder Eric Dobrusin, who also volunteers at Leader Dog in his spare time, “Sponsoring this event and our involvement with Leader Dog meant a great deal to the firm. We are pleased to play a role in giving people who are blind or low vision the opportunity to experience the freedom, safety, and companionship of partnership with a dog.”

Leader Dogs for the Blind is a guide dog training school located in Rochester Hills, Michigan. It was founded in 1939 by Lions Club members Charles Nutting, Don Schuur, and S.A. Dodge as the second guide dog school in the United States. Since then, Leader Dog has paired over 14,000 dogs with the visually impaired worldwide, making it one of the largest organizations of its kind.
