NORMAN L. SIMS was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1981 and became registered to practice as a patent attorney before the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office in 1982. He graduated magna cum laude from Albion College in 1978 with a BA in Chemistry and Pre-Law Liberal Arts and magna cum laude from the University Of Detroit School Of Law in 1981 with a JD.
From 1981 to February 2009, he was a member of the Intellectual Property Group of The Dow Chemical Company where he provided counseling on intellectual property to a variety of Dow businesses concentrating on business use of intellectual property to enhance the profits of the businesses. During his tenure at Dow he served as the patent counsel for business units and joint ventures of Dow and served as an intellectual capital manager for Dow businesses. He has experience at advising business on how to utilize intellectual property to improve profits, preparing and prosecuting United States and International chemical patent applications, preparing opinions on patent validity and freedom to practice, preparing and interpreting intellectual property agreements, developing and implementing business based intellectual property strategies, handling the intellectual property aspects of forming and taking apart business ventures, training business and technical clients and patent attorneys on intellectual property matters and handling the intellectual property aspects of the sale and acquisition of businesses.
In April 2009, Norman Sims joined The Dobrusin Law Firm as a shareholder.
Norman Sims served as a council member of the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Section and as the Council Chairperson in 2000/2001. He is active on the Original Equipment Supplier Association Intellectual Property committee and participated in the development of the associations training manual on intellectual property. He is a State Bar of Michigan Fellow.
Norman Sims was awarded a Six Sigma Green Belt at The Dow Chemical Company. He was awarded his Competent Toastmaster’s award by Toastmasters International.
He has served as a Little League baseball coach, a Cub Scout leader, as the president of two Jaycee Chapters (Romulus and Midland Michigan) and served as a Discussion Leader for Bible Study Fellowship. Norman Sims was trained as a Stephen Minister and Stephen Leader and is presently the Director of Stephen Ministry for Woodside Bible Church in Troy, Michigan.
